"And while the books may have brought us together, the community is what made Passion & Prose what it is today."
It started with a book club. It became a community.
For a long time, I had wanted to start a book club. I had the idea, the books, and plenty of encouragement from friends. What I didn’t have was the courage to believe that people would actually show up.
Then, in 2025, I was laid off from my job. In the middle of navigating an unexpected career transition and the uncertainty of a long job search, I found myself needing something I hadn’t realized I was missing: community. I needed a reason to step away from the job search, connect with people, and do something simply because I loved it.
So I finally took the chance. I sent a message to my neighborhood chat asking if anyone would be interested in a book club for Black women. I had no idea what would come from that one message. On September 26, 2025, Passion & Prose was born.
